Our Story

Justice Guided by Culture and Community

Led by Mob, Shaped by Culture

Justice Our Way is a community-led initiative focused on reducing over-incarceration by investing in local, culturally informed solutions. We work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to develop pathways that support healing, accountability, and stronger futures.

Our work centres the voices of community, especially those who have been silenced or excluded, and shifts resources away from systems that cause harm toward those that care. By addressing the root causes of crime — including housing, employment, education, and mental health — Justice Our Way supports local responses that break the cycle of incarceration and build stronger, safer communities.

We believe that real justice begins in community — where people are supported, seen, and heard. Our approach is grounded in cultural knowledge, guided by the leadership of Elders, and informed by those with lived experience. Through deep listening and long-term relationships, we create space for community-led solutions to take shape and grow.

Justice Our Way is not a service or program. It is a movement for change, built from the ground up. It reflects the strength and resilience of our communities, and our shared commitment to a future where justice is defined by care, not punishment.

From the Banks of the Ross River

Justice Our Way is based in Townsville, on Bindal and Wulgurukaba Country, along the Ross River. This river is central to our work and holds deep cultural significance for many in our community.

The Ross River is more than a location. It is a place of story, connection, and continuity. Our work draws strength from this landscape and the people who live here. Just as the river sustains life, our commitment to justice flows from the land, the culture, and the enduring strength of community.

Our Story in Symbol

Justice Our Way logo isn’t just a picture – it’s our story on Country, told through the hills, the river, and the spirit that surrounds us.

The big hill in the logo is Castle Hill, the heart of Townsville that watches over our community. Beside it, the smaller hill is Mount Stuart, standing strong on the other side. Flowing between them is Galbidera – the Ross River. This river isn’t just water – it’s the lifeline that has always marked the boundary between the Wulgurukaba and Bindal peoples, the Traditional Owners of this land.

But our logo isn’t only about land and water. The serpent circles around the whole design, holding our story together. For us mob, the serpent carries the Dreaming, the spirit of creation, culture, and connection that runs through all Aboriginal people. It’s there to protect, guide, and remind us of who we are and where we come from.

When you look at this logo, you see Country, Culture, and Community all tied together. It shows our people coming as one – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people standing side by side, keeping culture strong, healing old wounds, and walking forward on our own path to justice – our way.

This logo is more than a design – it’s our voice, our spirit, our future.
